About
I have worked for four years as an IT systems technician: setting up and maintaining servers, running databases, and keeping business software working for the people who depend on it every day. I am also a programmer, so I read API docs, test integrations and look at how a tool stores your data, not only at its feature list.
That is the angle of this site. Most "best software" lists are written by marketers or by the software companies themselves. I look at the questions that cost a small business real money later: Can you export your customers and job history if you leave? Does the QuickBooks sync actually work both ways? What happens to your data and your price when you add a second truck?
I am based in Madrid, Spain, and I write for owners of small US home-service businesses. Where a detail depends on US practice (1099 contractors, state sales tax, how US payment processors charge), I link to the official source rather than guess. Prices and plans are checked against each vendor's website and dated on every page.
How I review software
- Prices from the source. Every price, plan and limit is checked on the vendor's website, and each page shows when it was last checked.
- Clear about sources. When I have used a tool myself, the page says so. Otherwise I work from the vendor's own pricing pages, help center and API documentation, and link to them.
- The costs nobody lists. Data export, accounting sync, payment processing fees, per-user pricing, contracts and onboarding fees.
- One trade at a time. A plumber's emergency dispatch and a cleaner's recurring visits need different tools, so each guide is written for one trade.
How this site makes money
The site may show ads and use affiliate links: if you sign up for a tool through one of them, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That never changes which tool I recommend. Details in theaffiliate disclosure.
Corrections
Prices and features change constantly. If you spot something out of date, tell me and I'll fix it and update the date on the page.
