Starting a handyman business doesn’t require a monthly software bill. Several companies offer free plans that cover quoting, jobs, invoicing and payments. They’re not charities: free plans earn money from card processing fees or are designed to make you upgrade once you’re busy. That’s fine, as long as you know where each limit is. This guide lists the free options with their real limits, from each vendor’s official website as of October 19, 2026.
The free stack that works for most new handymen
For a solo handyman doing up to about 30 jobs a month, this combination costs nothing in subscriptions:
- ServiceM8 Free for jobs: quotes, scheduling, photos and invoices on site.
- Square to take payments, or ServiceM8’s own payments (it gives bonus jobs when you accept cards).
- Wave Starter for bookkeeping, so your accountant gets clean records at tax time.
You’ll pay card processing fees on each payment, and you’ll outgrow it once you hire help or pass 30 jobs a month. Until then, it’s a complete setup.
The free plans compared
ServiceM8 Free: the most complete free job management
ServiceM8’s Free plan covers up to 30 jobs a month for one user. You create quotes and invoices on site, keep photos on the job card and in the client’s history, and clients can book online. SMS messages cost 10¢ each, and ServiceM8 says you can earn unlimited bonus jobs by accepting card payments through it.
What’s missing on Free: job costing, proposals, progress invoices, markup billing, bundles and forms. The first paid plan, Starter, costs $29/month for 50 jobs with unlimited users, so the step up is small when you need it.
Square: free invoicing and payments
Square’s free plan has no monthly fee and includes invoices, recurring invoices, estimates, contracts and projects. In-person card payments cost 2.6% + 15¢, online and invoice card payments 3.3% + 30¢, and ACH by invoice 1% with a $1 minimum.
It has no crew scheduling or trades price book, so pair it with ServiceM8 or a calendar. Multi-option estimates and payment schedules for deposits need Square Plus ($49/month per location).
Wave: free bookkeeping with unlimited invoices
Wave’s Starter plan is free and includes unlimited estimates, invoices, bills and bookkeeping records, with reports for tax time. Card payments cost 2.9% + 60¢ (3.4% + 60¢ for Amex), and ACH costs 1% with a $1 minimum. The 60-cent fixed fee is the highest in this guide, so many handymen use Wave for books and invoices, and take card payments in person through another app.
Contractor+: free, but only 5 documents a month
Contractor+’s FREEDOM plan is free forever with a basic CRM for up to 250 leads and clients, a mobile app and card and eCheck payments, but only up to 5 estimates or invoices a month. That’s enough for occasional weekend work, not for a business. Its Pro Team plan is $58/month with two users.
QuickBooks Free: books only
QuickBooks has a Free plan for one user with one bank connection and core reports (profit and loss, balance sheet). It allows two invoices a month unless you turn on QuickBooks Payments, and the mobile app and third-party integrations aren’t available on Free. It’s useful only if your accountant wants your books in QuickBooks and you invoice elsewhere. Simple Start costs $38/month.
Which free option for which handyman
| Your situation | Free setup |
|---|---|
| Weekend or side work, a few jobs a month | Square for estimates, invoices and payments |
| Full-time solo, up to 30 jobs a month | ServiceM8 Free + Wave Starter for books |
| Mostly landlord and property manager work | ServiceM8 Free for jobs + Square or Wave for invoices with ACH |
| Need an accountant to see your books in QuickBooks | QuickBooks Free for books, invoices from Square or ServiceM8 |
| Mostly quotes, very few jobs | Contractor+ FREEDOM (5 documents a month) |
The common thread: one tool for jobs, one for getting paid and one for books, all free, as long as you stay under the limits. When a single paid app replaces all three, it’s usually time to switch.
What free really costs: card fees
Free plans are paid for by processing fees. On a typical $180 handyman invoice:
| How the customer pays | Fee |
|---|---|
| Square, in person (2.6% + 15¢) | $4.83 |
| Wave Starter, card (2.9% + 60¢) | $5.82 |
| Square, online invoice (3.3% + 30¢) | $6.24 |
| ACH bank transfer (1%, $1 minimum) | $1.80 |
At 40 invoices a month, the difference between the cheapest and most expensive card option is about $56, more than many paid subscriptions. Taking cards in person and offering ACH for larger jobs keeps “free” actually cheap.
Set up the free stack in an afternoon
- Create your ServiceM8 account and add your 20 most common tasks as items with prices, so quotes take minutes.
- Import your existing clients from your phone contacts or a spreadsheet.
- Connect payments, in ServiceM8 or Square, and test a $1 payment to yourself.
- Set up Wave with your business bank account, and create categories for materials, tools, vehicle and phone.
- Write your policies once: minimum charge, trip charge, deposit for materials and payment terms. Paste them into your quote template.
- Claim your Google Business Profile (it’s free) and add the link to your invoices, so happy clients can leave a review.
The whole setup takes a few hours, and it replaces paper quotes, text-message invoices and the shoebox of receipts.
When to stop using free software
Upgrade when one of these happens:
- You pass 30 jobs a month (ServiceM8 Free) or 5 documents (Contractor+).
- You hire help and need more than one login.
- You start small remodels and need deposits, progress invoices or job costing.
- You catch yourself typing the same job into two apps.
At that point, compare ServiceM8 Starter ($29/month), Jobber Core ($49/month) and Markate ($49.95/month) in our handyman software guide.
Who this guide is for (and who it isn’t)
For: new and part-time handymen who want to run their business properly without a monthly software bill.
Not for: established handyman businesses with a team, where a paid plan’s automation usually pays for itself.
The bottom line
The best free setup is ServiceM8 Free for jobs (up to 30 a month), Square for invoices and payments, and Wave for bookkeeping. Contractor+ and QuickBooks Free are too limited for regular work. Free plans earn their money from card fees, so take cards in person and offer ACH where you can. Check current limits and fees on each vendor’s site: these come from official pages on October 19, 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Is free software good enough for a handyman business?
For a part-time or new handyman, yes: ServiceM8 Free plus Square or Wave covers quotes, jobs, invoices, payments and basic bookkeeping. Once you pass about 30 jobs a month or hire help, a paid plan usually saves more time than it costs.
What does "free" really cost?
Card processing fees. Free plans make money when your customers pay by card, so compare the fee on a typical invoice: on a $180 invoice, Square's in-person rate costs about $4.83, while Wave's Starter card rate costs about $5.82.
Can I use Google Calendar and Sheets instead?
For a few jobs a week, yes. You lose automatic reminders, quote follow-ups and the link between quotes, jobs and invoices, which is where most handymen lose money.
When should I upgrade to a paid plan?
When you hit a limit (jobs, documents or users), when you need job costing or deposits, or when you notice you're retyping the same information in two places.
